Genius Hour Movie Trailer

  1. When reflecting on the process of creating my movie trailer, there are both positives and negatives worth touching upon. First, was how easy and user-friendly the programming of iMovie is. I am no tech-expert, but I found this program surprisingly easy to use. It comes with many different templates to choose from, which have their own unique settings already built in (transitions, timing, music, special effects). This made the end product look very professional, yet it required little effort on my part to make it look that way. Thus, it would be easy to use for students, even in primary/junior grades. Another perk of this program is the ability to make extensive changes and special effects, for those who are “tech-savy” and want to personalize their product more. It offers the option of inserting your own music, changing transition, and other effects. This allows the program to cater to a variety of people and their varying levels of ability to use technology.

Most of the challenges I faced had little to do with using the program, and more so with developing and sharing my ideas. First, I found it difficult to think of an idea for my movie trailer. I lacked any ideas for how to introduce my GH in an interesting, creative way. Thus, I would have enjoyed seeing more examples to spark my creativity. Once I finished my trailer, I was ended up surprisingly happy about the end product; it looked professional and intriguing. Thus, I wish we would have had an opportunity to share these with the class. Students can consolidate and extend their thinking when given the chance to share their ideas and products with others. They would be even more excited to share such a creation. One specific challenge I had with using the technology was how to export the product and embed it into my blog. I struggled with getting the video onto my Google Drive, before being about to post it here. This is why it is helpful for instructors to post of video that breaks down the steps to take, much like our instructor in this course. Ultimately, the pros outweigh the cons and I look forward to using this program and idea in my future classroom!
